Former center fielder that played professionally in the Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball league, as well as the MLB during his 15-year career. During his playing career, he was a 10x Golden Glove Award winner, and also a 7x NPB All-Star while in Japan. Upon his retirement in 2022, he was hired to become the manager of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in October 2021.

He first began his professional career in 1991 with the Hanshin Tigers. He played with the Hanshin Tigers from 1991 until 2000.
Trivia
While playing with the San Francisco Giants during the 2002 MLB season, he became the first Japan-born baseball player to play in the World Series.
