British jazz drummer best known for his work in a number of British bands in the 1970s, including Gilgamesh.
Before Fame
He studied music at the Guildhall School of Music. He initially learned to play trombone as a teenager before choosing drums on which he made his first professional appearance. He became interested in jazz and in the early 60s moved permanently into this field, working often with the small group co-led by Ian Carr and Don Rendell.
Trivia
He was much in demand as accompanist to American jazzmen visiting the UK, among them Lee Konitz.
Family Life
He was born Trevor Ramsey Tomkins in London. He was the first cousin of Roy Budd, jazz pianist and film composer of Get Carter fame, and Peter C. Budd, a jazz guitarist living in Chicago, and was a member of various trios and other line-ups with his cousin Roy.

From the 70s onwards became one of the most sought-after jazz drummers in the UK, where he has played with Michael Garrick, Barbara Thompson, and Mike Westbrook.
