As a high school freshman, he played for Chicago's Mount Carmel High School and led the freshman team to a 26-0 record. When he was a 15-year-old sophomore, his uncle Tyjuan Lewis was shot and killed. He transferred to the Henry Ford Academy School for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan, where his uncle and Lewis' brother was the principal.

He was born in Chicago and grew up in Hyde Park. He learned how to play basketball from his father, Theodore, who took him to pick-up games at the city parks. After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, he played for the Boston Celtics in the summer league and signed with the Warriors in August.
