He attended the University of Central Florida and played for the UCF Knights. He was named an All-American by the Football Writers Association of America in 2017. Smith was selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Saints.

He was the recipient of a Jameis Winston touchdown pass, via a trick play against the TTampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL season.
