Perhaps better known by the stage name Toshi, he was the co-founder and lead vocalist for the Japanese heavy metal group X Japan before launching a solo career.

He formed a band called Dynamite (later called Noise) with a childhood friend named Yoshiki in 1977. He was a guitarist for the band, later becoming the singer following the departure of their first vocalist.
