About
Mathematics educator and founder of the Kumon Institute of Education, which led to the opening of Kumon Centers around the globe. His methods grew popular and successful because of their customization to each student's unique level of ability. He was also a public speaker and in his later years he gave lectures on the significance of tailoring lessons to each student.
Before Fame
He earned a degree in mathematics from the College of Science at Osaka University in Japan before going on to become a high school mathematics teacher. He was inspired to create the Kumon Method of Learning based on the practices he used to teach his own son, who became skilled in differential and integral calculus by the time he was in high school.
Trivia
The Toru Kumon Museum is located in his hometown of Osaka, Japan. October 20th is dedicated as Kumon Foundation Day, as it marks the official anniversary of the institute's establishment. Additionally, Asteroid 3569 Kumon was named in his honor.
Family Life
He has a son named Takeshi with his wife Teiko. It was his wife's urging after their son performed poorly on a math test that he decided to take upon the responsibility of teaching him math on his own via daily handwritten worksheets.
