British costume and set designer who received an Academy Award for his work on the 1980 film version of All That Jazz. He designed numerous Broadway productions, including Pippin, Golden Boy, and House of Blue Leaves.

He designed his first Broadway production, Noel Coward's Conversation Piece, in 1957.

He was married to famed actress and singer Julie Andrews (of Sound of Music and Mary Poppins fame) from 1959-1967. The couple had one daughter, Emma Katherine Walton.
