American politician best known as the 28th and current California State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He represented the 15th Assembly district from the years 2014 to 2018, encompassing the northern East Bay as a democrat.
Before Fame
He attended Temple University, where he was the student body president. He has worked loading UPS trucks and the night shift at McDonalds for what was then the minimum wage of only $3.35 an hour. He later earned his undergraduate degree and two Master's degrees from Bryn Mawr College.

Family Life
His mother Cecelia was an immigrant from Panama. She passed away when he was six. He and his brother were raised by his cousin.
