Tony Popovic

About

Australian former professional soccer player, athlete, and current coach known for playing center-back for Sydney United, Sydney FC, and several foreign soccer teams in England and Japan. He is also known for playing for the Australian national team and for being part of Australia's victory over Uruguay in the 2005 World Cup Qualifiers, which led the team to compete in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. 

Before Fame

He began playing soccer at a young age. He played youth soccer for Sydney United before being recruited to play professionally for the club in 1989. 

Trivia

He led Western Sydney Wanderers to the 2014 AFC Champions League title, resulting in them becoming the first Australian team to win the competition. He was an important figure in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He is quite tall, standing at six feet, four inches.

Family Life

He was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He has four children. His sons are professional soccer players Gabriel and Kristian Popovic.

Associated With

He played alongside Mile Jedinak during his time on the Crystal Palace team. He and Mark Schwarzer were teammates on the Australian national team in Australia's 2006 World Cup campaign.
