From 2000 to 2003, he played college football at Clemson as a wide receiver. He was named the 41st head coach at the University of Virginia, replacing Bronco Mendenhall. While at Clemson, he won the Broyles Award, given to college football's top assistant coach. He helped recruit Travis Etienne Jr to Clemson and turn him into a star.
