Author and academic who is known for his work as a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and at Harvard's Extension School. Specializing in knowledge of nuclear weapons, Russia, and other national security affairs, he has written several books on the subject including The Death of Expertise in 2017 and Eve of Destruction in 2008. 

Before Fame

He earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University and his Master's degree from Columbia University. He then earned a doctorate from Georgetown University. He taught international relations at Dartmouth College and in 1988 he served in the United States Senate. He published his first book The Sacred Cause in 1993.

He has won several awards for his academic work including the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award at the Petra T. Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Award from Harvard Extension School in 2012.
