Remembered for co-starring with Ann Savage in the 1945 thriller Detour, he also appeared in Out West with the Hardys, Crime, Inc., and other films of the 1930s and '40s. Additionally, during the mid 1930s, he performed on the Broadway stage.
Before Fame
While studying at Northwestern University and Harvard University, he competed on the schools' boxing teams, scoring close to thirty wins in collegiate matches.
Trivia
In 1965, he shot and killed his third wife, Gale Bennett, and was convicted of manslaughter and given a ten-year prison sentence.
Family Life
He was married three times: to Vicky Lane (from 1948 until 1950); to Patricia Fenton (from 1956 to 1958); and to Gale Bennett (from 1960 until her death in 1965). His son, Tom Neal, Jr., was born in 1957.
Associated With
During the early 1950s, he and actor Franchot Tone were involved in a love triangle with actress Barbara Payton. On several occasions, Payton left one of the two men to be with the other.
