Before Fame
He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. In 1966, he graduated from State University of New York at Cortland at Plattsburgh where he played basketball and baseball. He is a member of the school's 1000 Point Club in basketball and is a 1986 inductee of the Plattsburgh State Athletic Hall of Fame.
Trivia
From 1971 to 1976, he was the host of Make a Wish, an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Sunday-morning children's TV series broadcast on ABC.

He is the son of Jim Chapin. He is married to Bonnie Chapin, former wife of film director Wes Craven. His daughters and stepdaughter perform as the Chapin Sisters. His brothers are Steve Chapin and folk singer Harry Chapin.
