Before Fame
He was 11 years old when he was hired for his first job at a picture-framing firm. He never attended college, yet contributed to the Art Deco movement and was proficient in other styles, such as Mission Revival, Neoclassical, and Beaux-Arts.

He was known for designing movie theaters, skyscrapers, and the interior of iconic cocktail lounges like the Top of the Mark and The Cirque.
Family Life
He was born to German immigrant parents. He did not marry, nor did he have any children, although he did have a longterm girlfriend. His younger brother, Milton, took over his firm upon Pflueger's sudden death in 1946.
