Before Fame
He began playing baseball as a boy. He played baseball for Lanphier High School before he graduated and then played for the South Florida Bulls baseball team in 1979. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 1980 but did not start playing professionally for them in the major leagues until 1983.
Trivia
He managed the Philippines national baseball team while they attempted to qualify for the World Baseball Classic in 2017. The death of his son Sam ultimately led to the adoption of the two Family Leave lists (the bereavement list and the paternity list) adopted by Major League Baseball, because at the time there was bereavement leave in the MLB for players.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois. He has two sons who also played baseball. He had another son who died at age 6 after being struck by a car.
