About
Irish playwright, novelist, and academic known for writing 16 stage plays, a novel, and a large amount of academic essays and writings. Some of his best known plays include "Double Cross"(1986), "The Madame MacAdam Travelling Theatre" (1992), "Talbot's Box" (1977), "Tea and Sex and Shakespeare" (1976), "The O'Neill" (1969), and "The Secret Fall of Constance Wilde" (2000).
Before Fame
He attended St Kieran's College. He then attended University College Dublin where he obtained a degree in education. He was appointed Professor of English at University College Galway in 1978 but eventually resigned in 1989 to focus on writing. His first big playwriting break was in the year 1968 with his play "The Death and Resurrection of Mr Roche."
Trivia
His play "The Death and Resurrection of Mr Roche" was the first Irish play to have a gay figure as a central character. He played hurling in high school, which is an ancient Gaelic sport.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland. He passed away on the date of December 7th, 2023.
