Before Fame
He attended Carleton College until 1971. In 1975 he attended University of Massachusetts and then Lesley University in 1976. In 1987 he studied at the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Family Life
His father was a doctor who suffered a nervous breakdown which incapacitated him for many years. Their family home was at one point destroyed by a tornado. He credits an aunt who became a director of the Amsterdam International School of being an unconscious influence for his passion for childhood education.
