Greek film director, filmmaker, writer, and screenwriter who is known for his films Eternity and a Day (1998), Landscape in the Mist (1988), Ulysses' Gaze (1995), and Alexander the Great (1980).
Before Fame
He attended law school at the University of Athens but dropped out to pursue literature in Paris in the year 1961. He returned to Greece in the year 1964 and worked as a critic for a newspaper before he decided to pursue filmmaking.
Trivia
He released his first short film Broadcast (1968) at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in the year 1968. He released his feature film debut with Reconstruction in the year 1970. His film Eternity and a Day (1998) won Best Movie at the Cannes Festival in the year 1998. He was the co-founder of the Greek magazine Modern Cinema.
Family Life
He was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He married Phoebe Economopoulou in the year 1980, and they were married until he died in the year 2012. They had three children together. He died on January 24th, 2012 after being hit by a car while working on one of his film projects.
