Before Fame
He attended Coker University for his undergraduate degree in English. He earned an M.F.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in creative writing in 1997. He published his first book of poetry Muscular Music in 1999. He worked as a professor in the creative writing department at Carnegie Mellon University until 2013 when he joined the English Department at The University of Pittsburgh.
Trivia
He is a 2014 MacArthur Fellow. His book Lighthead won the National Book Award for Poetry in 2010. He is known for having taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and New York University.
Family Life
He was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He has two children with his ex-wife his ex-wife Yona Harvey.
