Prior to working in the film industry, he served in the British Merchant Navy. He eventually earned his first job in the film industry during the 1930's.
Trivia
He is often credited as being the first film director and editor to introduce horror films in color. In the year 2010, his film Horror of Dracula was named "Greatest Horror Film" ever created by The Guardian magazine. In addition to directing, he has also received credits as a screenwriter and editor.
