Maria took a sabbatical in 2013, to have her first child, who's now 8, and just last year she had her second daughter, whom she gave birth to just over a year ago. Ons Jabeur, her Wimbledon semifinal opponent, also happens to be her Palm Beach, Florida neighbor and barbecue buddy.

Family Life

Her father Heinrich Malek was a Polish international handball player, and her husband is also her coach, the French former tennis player Charles-Edouard Maria, whom she married in 2013.

Associated With

Maria is the first mother to advance to the semifinals since Serena Williams did so back in 2019. Her admitted tennis-playing role model-mother is Kim Clijsters, the retired Belgian mom who won three Grand Slam titles after giving birth to her daughter in 2008.
