Before Fame
He began his musical journey as a pianist and organist. His early career involved playing the organ in churches. He then moved to London and became a theater musician.
Trivia
He was a regular conductor for various BBC radio broadcasts in the 1920s and 1930s. His original compositions are largely in the light music genre. His oeuvre also included a number of parlor songs, such as "First Love" and the "Garden of My Love", numerous piano solos, and some church music.
