He began boxing at a young age. He competed in a wide variety of numerous tournaments as a youth. He transitioned to the professional boxing ranks in 2016. He gained widespread recognition after winning the IBF flyweight world title in 2021.

He was born Sunny James Edwards. He was born and raised in Sutton, London, England. His older brother is former flyweight world champion Charlie Edwards.
