He was convicted of child sexual abuse in the year 2016. He was sentenced to four years in prison, but he only served one. After the game, Dutch Olympic Committee press attache John van Vliet addressed remarks about van de Velde's criminal record and protecting a child rapist by saying, "We are supporting Van De Velde to do his sport as best as possible, at a tournament he qualified for".
