He began fishing at the age of three and shot his first squirrel at eight. He continued with his passion in hunting and attended Grand Valley State University and graduated in December of 1996. He also has a MFA from University of Montana-Missoula.

During both high school and college, he trapped fur-bearing animals for the commercial markets. He also runs a successful podcast which features his stories, tips, and adventures when hunting.
