An author, historian, journalist, and foreign policy expert, he is best known for his award-winning 2004 work, Military Power: Explaining Victory and Defeat in Modern Battle. He began teaching in George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs in 2012.

He became fascinated with military history as a child and went on to study public policy (and art history) at Harvard University. Upon graduation, he worked for a Washington, D.C. think tank that collaborated with the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
