Stéphane Dion

About

Canadian diplomat and former politician who became the Canadian ambassador to France and Monaco in June 2022. He served in a number of cabinet roles from 1996 to 2017, including minister of intergovernmental affairs, environment, and foreign affairs. He also served as ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2022.

Before Fame

Before entering politics, he was a political science professor at the University of Montreal, with research focusing on Canadian federalism and public administration.

Trivia

Dion served as Leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Liberal Party from 2006 to 2008. He ran in the 2008 federal election on an environmental platform, but was defeated by the Conservatives led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Family Life

He was born and raised in Quebec City. He is the second of five children of Denyse and Léon Dion. His mother was a real-estate agent and his father was an academic. He and his wife Janine Krieber have one child.
