Indian spiritual teacher, philosopher, author, and the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known for bringing the teachings of Lord Krishna and the Bhagavad-gita to the Western world and for spreading Gaudiya Vaishnavism across continents.
Before Fame
He was educated at Scottish Church College, where he studied English, Sanskrit, philosophy, and economics. He worked as a chemist and pharmaceutical distributor before he met his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, in 1922. His spiritual master strongly urged him to preach Krishna consciousness in English to the Western world. He gradually moved away from family life and material obligations to embrace a life of spiritual dedication. He formally declared his dedication to spirituality in 1959.
Trivia
He traveled alone to the United States aboard the cargo ship Jaladuta in 1965 when he was 69 years old and suffered two heart attacks during the journey. He arrived in New York with only a few dollars and a trunk of books. He wrote over 80 volumes of translated and original spiritual texts.
Family Life
He was born Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He was born and raised in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. He was born into a devout Vaishnava family. He married Radharani Devi in 1918. He died on November 14, 1977, after suffering from a long illness.
