Sophie Kerttu Scott

About

British neuroscientist, director of UCL's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, and Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow at University College London. She investigates the cognitive neuroscience of voices, speech, laughter, and particularly speech perception, speech production, vocal emotions, and human communication. 

Before Fame

In 1990, she received a bachelor's degree in life sciences at the Polytechnic of Central London, now the University of Westminster. After her studies, she started researching cognitive science while supervised by Peter Howell and a PhD at University College London.

Trivia

She is known for her stand-up comedy performances as well as her media appearances, including her participation on the BBC Radio 4 program The Infinite Monkey Cage. In 2020, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to neuroscience. She tweets comedy and neuroscience content on her sophiescott Twitter where she has over 20,000 followers.

Her parents are Colin Mountford Scott and Christine Winnifred Scott.
