Before Fame
In 1971, she graduated from Antioch College. She also obtained a master's in medieval literature in 1973 from Michigan State University and then doctoral work in Medieval studies at the University of California.

She won the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery in 1994. From 2011 to 2018, she worked as a non-fiction book reviewer for Publishers Weekly.
Family Life
Her father was a USAF captain and her mother was a psychologist. She married Paul Richard Newman in 1971.
