Professional basketball referee for the NBA, notable for several controversies surrounding his name. He has officiated over 1600 regular season games and over 200 playoff games in 28 seasons, including the 2010 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, which he refereed alongside Danny and Joey Crawford.

Before Fame

He had dreams of becoming a basketball officiant since childhood and served as a referee at local high schools in Silver Spring, Maryland before moving on to officiating collegiate games and Big South conferences. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1994 and adorned the #48 after earning a position within the NBA.

Trivia

He spearheaded the relationship between teams4taps and the NBA by donating the tickets he received for each basketball game to a TAPS family. The program aims to help connect grieving families of fallen heroes of the United States military with their favorite professional sports team. 

Family Life

He has three children, including his eldest - Jake, who is the godson of disgraced former NBA referee Timothy Donaghy.  

Associated With

He has formed a contentious relationship with several NBA players including Chris Paul and Paul Pierce, for his strict judgment during matches and tendency to call more personal fouls than the average referee during his career. In more than a dozen playoff games, he has referred when Chris Paul has been playing.
