It was at the age of eighteen that he began attending Derby College, taking the catering course primarily because it had the most girls in it. However, it wasn't until he began working at a restaurant under Mick Murphy that he discovered his passion for cooking.

His parents migrated to the UK shortly before his birth. His father ran numerous shops and his mother was a housewife. He and his wife Amanda met while both were teenagers.
