While playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes at the University of Iowa, he earned the title of Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year. He was also named as a First-team All-Big Ten member and ranked 1st among Iowa tight ends in catches and 2nd in yards.

He is the son of Joseph and Staci LaPorta. He has 3 sisters named Olivia, Alex, and Bella all of whom have been involved in athletics as well. Olivia and Bella played volleyball and Alex played collegiate basketball.
