Poet and author who wrote the 2023 memoir How to Say Babylon. She won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Autobiography, was a finalist the Kirkus Prize, and was long listed for the Women's Prize in Non-Fiction and the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature. Her 2016 poetry collection, Cannibal, also won multiple awards.

Before Fame

Her first poem was published in the Jamaican Observer when she was aged 16. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Bennington College. She earned an MFA in Poetry from the University of Virginia and a PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Southern California.

She served as an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Arizona State University. Her work has appeared in Time Magazine, The New Yorker, Harper's Bazaar, and The Nation.
