Known mononymously as Sabu and remembered for his roles in such 1940s American movies as Arabian Nights and Jungle Book, he also famously appeared in the 1937 British movie Elephant Boy. Also a pilot with the United States Army Air Forces, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in World War II.
Before Fame
He was born in Mysore, India, as the son of an elephant driver. When he was thirteen years old, he was discovered by American filmmaker Robert Flaherty, who cast him in Elephant Boy.
Trivia
Tragically, he died of a heart attack when he was just thirty-nine years old, despite appearing to be in peak physical condition.
Family Life
His marriage to actress Marilyn Cooper resulted in a son, rock musician Paul Sabu, and a daughter, animal handler Jasmine Sabu.

He co-starred with Raymond Massey in the 1938 British movie The Drum.
