He received his Bachelor's degree in economics from the University of North Carolina in 1975. He went on to get his PhD in the subject from the University of Chicago. He later taught at George Mason University, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Rochester, Stanford University, and the University of California, Los Angeles. He was featured on NPR and in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
