Before Fame
He received a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1938, and then earned a Ph.D in Chemistry in 1942 while working as a dishwasher.
Trivia
He was the chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality as well as the President of the National Audubon Society.
Family Life
He married Lillian Turner in 1938 and together they had four children, before she passed away in 1994. He then married his second wife, June Jenkins, in 1995.
