A British author best known for his works of humor, trivia, biography, and art history, he published the popular Top 10 of Everything series, as well as the Great Wonders of the World books. His other works include Potty, Fartwell & Knob (2007) and Dear Cats: The Post Office Letters (1986).

He was an anthropology student at Durham University. He began his publishing career in the late 1960s, working as a writer and researcher for Reader's Digest Books and Newsweek Books.
