Before Fame
He joined the Royal Australian Air Force in December 1940 in which he scored and organized the servicemen shows. He studied with the famed Eugene Goossens at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music.

He was born to a talented amateur pianist and storekeeper and postmaster. He married his wife Jennifer in 1966.
