Acclaimed writer of children's literature and fantasy fiction. Her best-known works include Sunshine, The Blue Sword and the Newbery Medal-winning book The Hero and the Crown.

Before Fame

She studied at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania before graduating from Bowdoin College in Maine.

Trivia

Many of her fantasy novels, including Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, are feminist re-workings of popular fairy tales.

Family Life

She grew up in Ohio as the daughter of a United States Navy officer and a school teacher. She later moved to England with her husband and fellow author Peter Dickinson.

Associated With

She and literary contemporary Cynthia Rylant were both recipients of the prestigious Newbery Medal for children's literature.
