Before Fame

He studied under Josef Albers, who established the Bauhaus School, and taught at Black Mountain College.

Trivia

He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1993 and the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts in 1995. He worked in printmaking, papermaking, and photography.

Family Life

He married and had a son with Susan Weil in the 1950s. He later formed relationships with Jasper Johns and Cy Twombly.
