Before Fame
He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University. He later obtained his MA from Bennington College in 2004.
Trivia
He became the first American to visit the Kamchatka Peninsula in Siberia following the Soviet Union's dissolution. In 2013, his film Blind Bird Singing Rain won the Best Canoeing Film Award from the Reel Paddling Film Festival.
