Australian war hero who received the Victoria Cross for his actions during World War I. He was known for leading a one-man attack on enemy trenches in Mont St. Quentin, France.
Before Fame
He worked on his father's property until he enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force in March 1917. He sailed with the 23rd Battalion's 19th Reinforcements and landed in France in November 1917.
Trivia
He was a private. He took part in a number of battles leading up to his death, including The Battle of Hamel and the Battle of Albert. He was gassed in the Battle of Albert.

He was born in Tatura, Australia. His parents were Robert and Christina Mactier. He was the seventh of ten children. His brother David served in the 37th battalion.
