During his professional career, he has both coached and played for the Welsh mens' national team during the UEFA Euro Cup as well as the FIFA World Cup. In November 2020, he officially began his tenure as manager of the Wales men's' national team.

He was named Watford's Player of the Year in 2000. His team won the 2000 Premier League Championship after defeating the Bolton Wanderers 2-0.
