In 1992, he became the first ever coach of the Ottawa Senators franchise. He even led the Senators to their first franchise win on the date of October 8, 1992 after defeating the Montreal Canadiens. After serving as a player-coach in 1982 and 1983, he then transitioned to coaching full-time in 1984 as an assistant coach for the Winnipeg Jets.

He is a husband and a father of three children. His son, Ryan, served as the assistant general manager of the Ottawa Senators in the year 2023.
