Famous as a singer and keyboardist for the Canadian roots music group The Band, he is also remembered for his work with Bob Dylan's one-time backup band, The Hawks.
Before Fame
He started playing the piano at the age of nine and later trained briefly at the Ontario Conservatory of Music. In his mid-teens, he formed a band called The Revols.
Trivia
Tragically, suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction, he committed suicide in his early forties.
Family Life
The child of a teacher and an automotive mechanic, he spent his childhood in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. His first marriage, to model Jane Kristiansen, resulted in two children, a daughter and a son; he later married a woman named Arlie.
Associated With
He appeared with Tommy Lee Jones in the 1970 independent film Eliza's Horoscope.
