British historian and academic who specialized in French history and was widely considered a leading authority on the French Revolution. He wrote several books on the subject, including the multivolume work The People's Armies, considered to be a classic works in the field. Much of his writing went unpublished until after his death, when a number of anthologies were assembled by other scholars.

He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, and went on to become a fellow of the college.
Trivia
He was named as a commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1978 for academic and literary achievement. In 1985, he was awarded membership in the Legion d'Honneur.

He was born in London, England to Francis Hills Cobb and Dora Cobb. He was married three times, fathering three sons and one daughter.
