In January of 2024, it was announced that he would be charged with the death of a fourth woman. According to NBC News, "If he is found guilty, 'he was living a double life,' said Rosemarie Kafka, 56, a former neighbor who had lived near the Heuermann family before moving last year. 'You know, the regular guy who goes to work, has kids in the local school and in a good neighborhood, but he's killing people on the side.'"

He was born and raised in Long Island. He divorced his first wife Elizabeth Ryan, then married Asa Ellerup. He is a father to a daughter and a son.
