Before Fame

He is a cancer survivor who beat lymphoma and multicentric Castleman's disease, a rare genetic disorder. During this time he lost much of his hearing, vision and voice, but regained all three after two years of treatment.

In Week 11 of the season, select viewers were allowed to pick contestant songs and Parkland shooting survivor Noa Golan picked "Try A Little Tenderness" for Lamarr. She explained she was inspired by his victory over the disease.

His mom has accompanied him to The Voice competition in Los Angeles, and he's featured photos her in the makeup chair on his eponymous Instagram.
