At the age of 91, he became the oldest person to ever serve in the House of Representatives, the oldest person ever elected to a House term, and the oldest House member ever to cast a vote. He passed away 5 years later.

Trivia
In 2004, he switched to the Republican Party after being a member of the Democratic Party for over 50 years. He was the final member of Congress from the G. I. Generation.
Family Life
He married his wife, Mary Ellen Murphy, on November 14, 1944. Together they had three sons.
